Synopsis:   The class is designed to facilitate accessibility within our communities, and is an update of presentation for mandatory continuing Ed for Architects’ Licenses, given at the State Building in Oakland for the AIA. Highlights of Accessible designs will demonstrate inspiring solutions for compliance with State of CA and Federal Accessibility code requirements. The class will begin with navigation of the 2016 CA Building Code’s Chapter 11B. The ADA (Public Accommodations) and ABA (Federal Facilities) standards will be reviewed. CA Chapter 11B Tabs and Snacks will be distributed during two 10-15 minute breaks. An accessibility practice session will be included in the last 30 minutes.

LUIHSW units are available as Learning Units for AIA. This class is taught by an ICC Preferred Provider.

Instructor:  Ally Watts, a CA Certified Access Specialist

Ally Watts, a CA Certified Access Specialist, intuitively incorporates accessibility into early stages of Architectural design for Public Accommodations, Educational and Civic facilities for city, state and federal jurisdictions. She served the State of CA as Senior Architect for Accessibility Review, including service for the Disability Advisory Committee for the CA Department of General Services and for the revision to CA Building Code, Chapter 11B, for compliance with the stricter requirements of CBC and the current ADA Standards for Accessible Design. She has served in the ICC as a voting member and local Chapter Treasurer, and as an ICC Plans Examiner. She looks forward to sharing knowledge and enthusiasm for universal design with you.

Bay Area Energy Storage Fire Safety and Code Symposium (Wed. 8 Nov, 2017 9:00 am - 5:00 pm)

The San Francisco Department of the Environment invites you to join industry colleagues for the Bay Area Energy Storage Fire Safety and Code Symposium on November 8th from 9AM-5PM.

 

At this event, a series of panel experts will explore:

·         Technology benefits and policies that are driving market transformation of energy storage. (with presentations from CAISO, Bloomberg New Energy Finance)

·         Technology basics, current and future applications and market projections (Stem, Tesla, CESA)

·         2019 standards for energy storage fire safety; product safety standards that address permitting concerns; and new State of CA requirements that aim to streamline permitting processes for energy storage. (the State Fire Marshal, UL, and more)

2017 Residential Code Essentials - Plumbing and Mechanical (Thu. 16 Nov, 2017 8:30 am - 4:30 pm)

Synopsis:   After all the recent code changes, this class is intended to help put both the Plumbing and Mechanical Codes in to perspective by exploring the major provisions of the 2016 California Plumbing Code and 2016 California Mechanical Code, both old and new provisions.  The background behind many of the code requirements will be discussed to provide the participant with an understanding of the intent of the requirements and how to apply it to their everyday work.  Learn more about how products and materials are tested to the required standards; the methods available for confirming code compliance, and key information on what to look for while enforcing the code.  Please bring your code book. 

CEUs are available.  This class is taught by an ICC Preferred Provider.

Instructors:

John LaTorra is currently a Regional Manager for CSG Consultants.  He recently retired from the City of Redwood City where he was the Building and Inspection Manager.  John chaired the Drafting, Public Hearing and Code Development Committees for the first international code, the International Plumbing Code.  John has over 43 years of experience with municipal inspections and building codes and has been an instructor with a community college, state university and chapters for more than 39 years on building, energy, solar, mechanical and plumbing subjects.  Mr. LaTorra is a former board member with ICC, ICBO and IAPMO and is able to instruct on a wide range of subjects related to the IBC, IRC, UPC, UMC, IMC and IPC.

John Taecker, P.E. has worked for Underwriters Laboratories for over 30 years. He has a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, and is a California Registered Professional Engineer in Safety Engineering. He is a nationally recognized speaker on building, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing products and installations.  John has served on the UMC and UPC Technical Committees and the International Mechanical Code Development Committee.

ICC Monterey Bay Chapter meeting (Thu. 16 Nov, 2017 10:30 am - 11:30 am)

Just a friendly reminder that the November Chapter meeting of the 16th will not be held at the Marina Library.  We will be meeting at the Monterey Regional Waste Management Facility which is located at 14201 Del Monte Blvd in Marina. We will meet at the administration building, and have an opportunity to tour the new recycling infrastructure that has just been completed. If you are going to attend and wish to take the tour please be advised that you will need to bring the following

  • a hard hat
  • safety vest
  • safety glasses, and
  • please wear closed toe shoes

Also if you are planning on attending if you would be so kind to let Dan Paolini know so we can get a head count for lunch which will be served prior to the tour. Thanks and hope to see you there!
