This two-day course is intended to provide essential information in the areas of code administration and history, legal aspects, customer service, basic construction, inspection process, zoning requirements, permit fee calculations, basic occupancy and construction types, basic means of egress and dealing with difficult customers.   The course is recommended for front counter personnel, other Building Department Staff and those who may be interested in preparing for the ICC Permit Technician Exam. A written exam will be offered by ICC on December 9that the same location. Space is limited. Please register at your earliest convenience.

Energy Storage Systems – ½ day seminar

Class Synopsis:

Learn about energy storage systems and their integration with photovoltaic (PV) systems or use as a stand-alone system. How are these products tested? What standards apply? What are the current related code development activities, and how can you participate?  Information will be provided on the latest research, codes, and standards development.  The specific code requirements in the Electrical, Fire, and Residential codes will be discussed.  Be prepared for the new requirements in the California codes that become effective July 1^st for these products.  AB 546, a new California bill that aims to streamline permitting processes for energy storage, will also be discussed, as well as tools currently available to assist in plan checking and inspections.

LUIHSW units are available as Learning Units for AIA.  This class is taught by an ICC Preferred Provider.

Instructor John Taecker has worked for UL for over 30 years. He has a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, and is a California Registered Professional Engineer in Safety Engineering. He serves on various building, mechanical, plumbing and electrical model code development committees, and actively participates in all levels of the code development process for ICC and IAPMO. He is a nationally recognized speaker on electrical, building, mechanical, and plumbing products and installations. He serves on the IAEI Southwestern Section Board of Directors and is an Inspector Member of the International Association of Electrical Inspectors (IAEI), and a Professional Member of the International Code Council (ICC) and the International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO).

Mike Stone is the NEMA West Coast Field Representative since August 2012. He is the alternate member representing NEMA on Code Making Panel 1 for the 2017 National Electrical Code. He also serves as Vice Chair of the Plumbing, Electrical, Mechanical and Energy Code Advisory Committee for the CA Building Standards Commission. Prior to his tenure with NEMA, he worked for over 25 years in California building departments at the County of Monterey and the Cities of Monterey, Salinas and, most recently, as Building Official for the City of Watsonville. He holds seven ICC Certifications and is a Certified Access Specialist (CASp). He has taught code classes at several CA Community Colleges and has been an IBEW electrical apprenticeship instructor. Mike is a member of ICC, IAEI, IBEW and NFPA, and is a Certified General Electrician in the State of California.

There are many requirements in the “other codes” (Building, Fire, Residential, Energy, etc.) besides the NEC that affect electrical installations and inspections.  Some examples include exit illumination and signage, smoke and fire alarm systems, emergency systems, allowable lighting loads, notching and boring of wood members, etc.  This presentation will include these topics and more, and give a comprehensive overview of electrical requirements in other codes.

Homer Maiel:

Homer is a licensed engineer and certified building official with West Coast Code Consultants. He has over 35 years’ experience working for different jurisdictions in the bay area as a plan check engineer, senior engineer and building official, He has served on numerous ICC and CALBO committees. He is also the chairperson of ICC Tri-Chapter Code Change committee. In that capacity, he has represented the Tri-Chapter in numerous code hearings and authored many code change proposals. Homer is also member of Code Advisory Committee of California Building Standards Commission.

Stuart Tom:

Stuart Tom is the President of JAS Pacific, Inc., a professional consulting firm that has provided municipal services for local jurisdictions for the past twenty years. Prior to joining the firm, he retired as the Fire Marshal for the City of Glendale, California. Prior to this appointment, he served as Building Official for sixteen years, wherein he managed plan check/engineering, field inspections, and administration of the city’s Building & Safety Division. He has been a registered engineer in the states of Washington and California for nearly 30-years, and is very active in code-development of Fire- and Life-Safety Standards at both the national and state levels.

Stuart has co-authored a number of provisions in the International Building Code as well as the California Building Code, California Residential Code, and California Fire Code. He currently serves in an influential capacity on a number of state-wide committees including the CALBO/CalChiefs Building and Fire Advisory Committee for which he is the past chair. In 2015, Stuart was elected to the ICC Board of Directors as the Section A delegate, which represents the states of California, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Alaska, Hawaii, and Canadian British Columbia. In 2016, he was also appointed to the Board of Directors for the International Accreditation Service (IAS).

Fire Resistance and Hazardous Uses and Inspection of Fire-resistance Rated Floors, Ceilings & Roofs

Class Synopsis:

This course identifies the various fire-resistance requirements applicable where hazardous uses are present. Fire-resistance-rated separations are often utilized as required enclosure elements for hazardous materials storage, or accepted as alternative to required spatial separation. An extensive discussion of control areas as described in IBC Section 414.2 is provided. In addition, applicable provisions for Group H occupancies, incidental uses and separated occupancies are addressed. Specific requirements in the 2015 International Fire Code regarding fire-resistance are also covered. 

This course deals with the application of IBC Chapter 7 related to the construction and protection of rated horizontal assemblies. The topics covered include understanding the differences between floor, floor/ceiling and roof/ceiling assemblies, as well as the protection requirements for penetrations, joint systems, ducts and air transfer openings in each of the separate elements. Additional discussion will look at the test standards used to evaluate the assembly and protection systems and how those protection systems are limited or could be compromised if not installed as tested.

Jay Woodward,  International Code Council

Jay is a Senior Staff Architect with ICC’s Business and Product Development department and works out of the Lenexa, Kansas Distribution Center. His primary responsibility is the development of new ICC publications and instructing seminars. Among the publications he has authored or co-authored are the Significant Changes books on the IBC, IMC and A117.1 standard, and the recent ICC book Firestopping, Joint Systems and Dampers.

With over 30 years of experience in building design, construction, code enforcement and instruction, Jay’s experience provides him with the ability to communicate effectively on issues of code application and design for code enforcement personnel as well as architects and designers. Jay has previously served as the secretariat for the ICC A117.1 standard committee, ICC’s Energy Conservation Code and the International Building Code’s Fire Safety Code Development committee.
