2017 ICC Class PV April 26th, Pleasanton

Eventbrite - Emerging Technologies for Photovoltaics

Emerging Technologies for Photovoltaics: Energy Storage Systems Integrated with PV, Rapid Shutdown Systems, and Fire Classifications

Class Synopsis:

Learn about the new Lithium-Ion Energy Storage Systems (from Tesla, LG and others) and their integration with photovoltaic (PV) systems, rapid shutdown systems, fire classification ratings, and innovative mounting methods. How are these products tested? What standards apply? How are these energy storage systems different from “old school” lead acid battery banks? Information will be provided on the latest research, codes, and standards development. Best methods will be shared for confirming code compliance, as well as what to look for while designing, plan checking, and inspecting these systems.

This class is taught by an ICC Preferred Provider.

Instructor: John Taecker, Duncan Cleminshaw & Charles Picard:

John has worked for UL for over 30 years. He has a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, and is a California Registered Professional Engineer in Safety Engineering. He serves on various building, mechanical, plumbing and electrical model code development committees, and actively participates in all levels of the code development process for ICC and IAPMO. He is a nationally recognized speaker on electrical, building, mechanical, and plumbing products and installations. He serves on the IAEI Southwestern Section Board of Directors, and is an Inspector Member of the International Association of Electrical Inspectors (IAEI), and a Professional Member of the International Code Council (ICC) and the International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO).

Duncan Cleminshaw is the Manager of Solar Product Compliance for Tesla Energy (formerly Solar City), the nation’s largest installer of residential photovoltaic systems. He and his team of Certification Engineers are responsible for rigorously evaluating and certifying solar products developed by Tesla’s product designers. Once those products are certified, he and his team ensure that all PV and energy storage systems are installed in compliance with all applicable codes. They are actively engaged with jurisdictions in 25 states. He chairs the UL 2703 Task Group on Manuals & Markings, as well as the Solar Energy Industry Association’s AHJ Outreach Committee. Tesla Energy’s Compliance Team is committed to providing building and fire officials current and relevant education on all aspects of PV and energy storage by providing regular trainings at for fire departments, ICC and IAEI chapters.

Charles is a Senior Engineer of Solar Product Compliance at Tesla, where in his current role he is responsible for vetting new products and methods for compliance with applicable codes and standards, in addition to acting as an educational resource to building, electrical and fire code enforcement officials. He is also a licensed Master Electrician, having completed a traditional four-year apprenticeship in the New England area. After a period of working on conventional large-scale commercial and industrial projects he has been focused exclusively on the PV industry since 2007.
