\nThis course ide
ntifies the various fire-resistance requirements applicable where hazardou
s uses are present. Fire-resistance-rated separations are often utilized a
s required enclosure elements for hazardous materials storage\, or accepte
d as alternative to required spatial separation. An extensive discussion o
f control areas as described in IBC Section 414.2 is provided. In addition
\, applicable provisions for Group H occupancies\, incidental uses and sep
arated occupancies are addressed. Specific requirements in the 2015 Intern
ational Fire Code regarding fire-resistance are also covered.
\nThis course deals with the application of IBC Ch
apter 7 related to the construction and protection of rated horizontal ass
emblies. The topics covered include understanding the differences between
floor\, floor/ceiling and roof/ceiling assemblies\, as well as the protect
ion requirements for penetrations\, joint systems\, ducts and air transfer
openings in each of the separate elements. Additional discussion will loo
k at the test standards used to evaluate the assembly and protection syste
ms and how those protection systems are limited or could be compromised if
not installed as tested.

s are available as Learning Units for AIA. This class an ICC courses and

\nJay is a Senior Staff Architect
with ICC’s Business and Product Development department and works out of th
e Lenexa\, Kansas Distribution Center. His primary responsibility is the d
evelopment of new ICC publications and instructing seminars. Among the pub
lications he has authored or co-authored are the Significant Changes <
/em>books on the IBC\, IMC and A117.1 standard\, and the recent ICC book <
em>Firestopping\, Joint Systems and Dampers.
\nWith over 30 years of experience in building design\, constru
ction\, code enforcement and instruction\, Jay’s experience provides him w
ith the ability to communicate effectively on issues of code application a
nd design for code enforcement personnel as well as architects and designe
rs. Jay has previously served as the secretariat for the ICC A117.1 standa
rd committee\, ICC’s Energy Conservation Code and the International Bu
ilding Code’s Fire Safety Code Development committee.
